Higher lumber tariffs unlikely to solve U.S. forestry investment shortfall

Softwoods such as pine and spruce are essential materials for U.S. housing construction, with their supply and price directly affecting housing costs and the overall construction sector. Around 40% of U.S. softwood demand depends on imports, more than 80% of which come from Canada. In September 2025, the U.S. government announced additional tariffs on imported lumber, raising duties on Canadian products by another 10% on top of the existing 35% rate set in August.
