European softwood sawmills face mounting crisis as log prices surge

Softwood sawlog prices have soared to record levels across Europe in 2025, putting unprecedented pressure on sawmills in Central Europe, the Baltics, and the Nordic region. Central Europe has seen price increases of up to 82%, while Nordic markets are up nearly 20%. In southern Germany and Austria, logs are now priced between €106 and €115 per cubic meter, while the Baltics exceed €120 per cubic meter. Romania is in the €115–120 range, with southern Sweden showing comparable levels.
