2025 was a challenging year for lumber manufacturers. Lumber prices declined 8% and U.S. housing starts fell 1%. Firms shuttered mills across major producing regions, and North American softwood lumber capacity declined 2%, from 74 BBFT to 73 BBFT. Despite this contraction, companies continued investing in selected strategic mills and wood baskets. The largest lumber producer in North America remains West Fraser, followed by Weyerhaeuser and Interfor.
